Article on Elle China - Luhan Effect: Unstoppable Reversal of Kpop Trend”

He is the popular all-rounder who is the main vocal, lead dancer and face of EXO-M. His name is perpetually on the hot search charts. This cute Chinese idol has power started the “Luhan Effect”, and an unstoppable “reversal of kpop trend” is coming your way!

At about 2 in the morning, I woke up and looked at my phone beside my pillow. Signing in to Weibo, I was surprised to see so much online buzz. My weibo wall was full of RTs from 1 to 2 a.m. The source of the buzz was a description of a Sina App that was automatically displayed after the App was downloaded - “Days are like pages of a book turned by the gentle breeze, page by page, we remember the dialogue but the chapters are blurred and the plot becomes old. However, words are engraved in our hearts forever.
Perplexed, I looked up the weibo user @M鹿M. It was an account without a V (account where the user has not authenticated his identity) and without a clear description. There was not even an original entry posted on his wall. Yet this account with only 5 RTs had accumulated 105,018 likes, 155, 742 RTs, and 1, 656, 560 comments. There was even 1 RT on Manchester United which had 1.25 million comments and broke the record for having the most number of comments on weibo (as of 2 August, 2 PM
It was only later that I found out that this “M鹿M” account belonged to Luhan, a Chinese member of Korean Idol Group EXO. He’s born in Beijing on 20 April, 1990 and was discovered by SM Entertainment while shopping in Myeong-dong. Thereafter, he debuted as a popular member of EXO in 2012. The impact of Luhan’s influence is more far-reaching than can be imagined – Because of him, Manchester United has now seen a surge of young loyal female supporters, a phenomenon that has never been seen before. Because Luhan’s hobby was solving the rubik’s cube, it is now a popular game with girls. In fact, anything that is related to him is always on the hot search charts.
The reason for Luhan’s immense appeal has much to do with his personality and charisma. He also has a cute face and is an all-rounder who can sing and dance. Furthermore, his Korean is outstanding, and he has strong overall talents. Hence, it is no surprise that he is highly popular locally and internationally even though he has debuted for just over a year.
The success of Luhan and other Chinese members of EXO have made SM Entertainment realise the importance of diversification as not only could Chinese members help to broaden the group’s influence in China and internationally but also start a “reversal of Kpop trend”. This trend has raised the profile of Chinese artistes based in Korea and they have attracted much attention from local fans who adore them even more. Super Junior’s Han Geng, Zhou Mi, EXO-M’s Luhan, Lay, Kris, Tao and f(X)’s leader Victoria are some examples. Let’s check out these local artistes based in Korea!

There has been a ton of Chinese media coverage and celebrity mentions on Luhan in the past weeks but I did not see much of these being shared here so I thought I will just translate some of the more interesting ones. I’m so proud that Luhan is receiving so much love from the Chinese media and celebrities, which has in turn attracted much interest in EXO from the general public as well.

Born in 1990, Luhan is close behind GD in the 2013 Korean Idols Ranking. The story behind his debut is interesting – Formerly the hunk of Beijing Haidian Foreign Languages School, he went to Korea on his own to pursue his studies. While shopping in Myeong-dong, due to his outstanding looks, he was spotted by the sharp-eyed SM talent scouts and joined SM Entertainment to become one of the most prolific representatives of the China-Korean wave. Not only did he receive immense popularity shortly after his debut, he has more than 500K fans on his weibo. He can just post anything on Weibo and it will receive hundreds of thousands, even a million comments. On the hot search rankings on weibo, Luhan’s ranking is perpetually at the top.
In Korean variety shows, Luhan will usually introduce himself as the“deer of the dawn”. His bright eyes really complement his baby face and fans have been calling him “Lu Eighteen” as he always looks 18 and to signify his youthful looks. Though he is naturally cute and uniquely handsome, his derpy face whenever he laughs carefreely on shows always makes his fans joke aloud “Sir Lu, if you wish to laugh in the future, please control your face and jaw!”
In the EX O –M groupLuhan is always perceived as the most thoughtful person. During their trainee period, Lay from the same group had practiced until he collapsed and it was Luhan who carried him home. It’s thoughtful act like these that fans relished. Then there’s another group of shippers out that who always have their eyes on Luhan and Sehun (EXO-K member). The two look alike each other and are once termed as twins. Their brotherly love always sets the fandom crazy.
Luhan’s low-key personality and his humility have won much praise from other celebrities. Just last month, Luhan participated in the Park Ji-Sung Asian Dream Cup. His moves and passes on the soccer field that day left soccer fans with a deep impression. Luhan’s exceptional soccer skills also earned him the praise from former Chinese soccer icon, Fan Zhiyi. Zheng Kewei, national soccer player, further told the media that when they were in the locker room, Luhan barely talked about his entertainment career and all they talked about was soccer. “Luhan’s humility really impressed me”. Another national soccer player, Shen Han also expressed “Luhan is a really wonderful person”.

Other Notable Mentions on Luhan by Chinese Celebrities on Weibo
1) Yuki, Happy Camp Director. She’s a devoted fan of Luhan and made several posts on him:

~ 2 August 2013: Why don’t you do one episode on Luhan for “People in the News”? (She sent this entry to the producer of the talk show who in turn said “OK! My shows are also in the final stage of production. What do fans think?” )
30 July 2013: If you know how much hard work is put in, getting awards is really more than a matter of being recognised. The best way to love your idol is to study hard and grow to become a stronger (and influential) person, so influential that you can use your own efforts to protect and support him. Luhan is a source of inspiration to many people, and I hope that his fans can be a source of inspiration to other s as well. And I also hope that no matter how things might change in the future, we’ll always stick it out with him.
~ 28 July 2013: Today is the actual 8500th day. Many friends asked me why I support Luhan. The answer is simple and the reason is not complicated at all. It’s because he doesn’t vie nor does he hanker (for the limelight). He does not sweat the small stuff and is just there silently holding on to his dream. And I’m like him.
~ 26 July 2013: 8500 Days. You are the best (released 26 hours ahead of time)
~ 17 July 2013: Silently watching over him with love. With full of positive energy, let’s set off:
